4 Things to Consider When Buying Surveillance Equipment

What Should You Look for in Home Security Cameras?

Home security cameras are one of the first things people look for when they want to protect their home. But finding the right ones can be a difficult choice. Each day, these cameras offer new features and specifications to consider. How do you know which ones matter and which are only there to boost a profile and price? In this blog, we highlight some of the features that you need to take into account to make sure you always have an eye on what’s going on in your Baton Rouge, LA home.

Image Resolution

Many people still associate surveillance footage with grainy video. Thankfully, you can invest in HD cameras that will get you crisp images of everything that’s happening on your property. Sometimes these are referred to as 1080p cameras. Since they take up more bandwidth, we recommend going with IP cameras rather than wireless ones, which lag often.

Wireless Access

Make sure that your security cameras connect to your network. This way you can access them remotely. View footage and even adjust cameras using a mobile app. As long as you have an internet connection, you’ll always be able to see what’s going on back home no matter where you are.

Security Alerts

Be careful not to invest in cameras that just provide a live feed. They won’t record footage and most importantly won’t alert you if something goes wrong. Install surveillance cameras that can detect suspicious activity through built-in motion sensors or video analytics. When they do, they can send you an alert to your smartphone. You can then look back through recorded footage to see what happened.

Camera Types

When it comes to surveillance cameras, we typically work with two models: bullet and dome. We generally avoid any covert or hidden cameras since visible ones are a great deterrent for thieves.

  • Bullet Cameras: These are likely what you envision when you think of a surveillance camera. Typically used outdoors due to their sturdier build, they’re ideal for looking at a fixed location. They can be mounted on your exterior wall to monitor your driveway or backyard.
  • Dome Cameras: The name for these cameras comes from their shape, which lets them record a 360-degree view of the room. These are typically ceiling-mounted in the center of the room to cover the entire area. These commonly include remote pan, tilt and zoom capabilities so you can adjust the camera from your smartphone.

Once you’ve chosen the ideal surveillance cameras for your home, it’s time to integrate them into a smart security system to get the most out of them.
